Assessing the title race: Things are heating up in La Liga and Serie A

As we enter the final stretch of the 2024/25 league campaign, the title races in both La Liga and Serie A are reaching boiling point. With just five games remaining in Serie A and six in La Liga, the battle for the crown in each league is far from over.

In this article, we’ll break down the race for the title in Italy and Spain’s top flights and share our predictions on who we think will emerge as champions.

La Liga

With six games left to play in Spain’s top division, there are just four points to separate Barcelona and Real Madrid. Hansi Flick’s side sit pretty at the top, but they will be fully aware of the quality that Madrid have within their ranks.

Following their recent Champions League exit, Real Madrid can now focus entirely on defending their La Liga title. In contrast, Barcelona are still competing in Europe and face a tough semi-final against Inter Milan, which could lead to some squad rotation in domestic fixtures.

For Madrid to reclaim the top spot, they’ll need Barcelona to slip up in the coming weeks—and capitalize when the two giants face off later this season. That clash could very well be the decider.

Barcelona, however, remain in pole position. While their European ambitions might cause a slight distraction, they have a strong chance to clinch their first Champions League title since 2015 and are currently favourites to do so.

At Premier Bet, we believe Barcelona have just enough of a cushion to hold off Madrid’s challenge, even with their Champions League commitments. The upcoming clash at Camp Nou will be crucial—especially considering Barça dismantled Madrid 4-0 in the reverse fixture.

Serie A

With just five games remaining in the Serie A season, Inter Milan and Napoli are locked at the top of the table. Inter dominated the league last year, finishing 19 points clear, but this season has seen a fierce challenge from Napoli, who have matched the reigning champions stride for stride in the 2024/25 campaign.

Like Barcelona, Inter still have Champions League football to contend with. This could significantly impact their domestic form in the season’s closing stages. Having not lifted the Champions League trophy since 2010, manager Simone Inzaghi may be tempted to prioritize European success over retaining the league title.

Napoli, meanwhile, have spent much of the season in first place. With Antonio Conte at the helm, their title bid is bolstered by his wealth of experience in winning league titles. The Napoli faithful will know this is something that could prove decisive as the pressure mounts.

Earlier in the campaign, both league meetings between these two sides ended in 1-1 draws. If they finish level on points, a play-off between the two heavyweights will be required to crown the Serie A champions.

Given Inter’s Champions League commitments, we believe Napoli are better positioned to finish the season strongly and claim the 2024/25 Serie A title.
